This 15-day trip from Adelaide to Darwin takes you through Australia’s sparsely populated red centre for the ultimate outback adventure.
Start your journey in Adelaide. This small capital city is one of Australia’s leading cultural centres, hosting the world’s largest cabaret festival every June. Enjoy a guided tour of the Adelaide Central Market, and be sure to sample some Barossa Valley wine!
The Flinders Ranges get your outback journey off to a spectacular start. Explore Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre stretching almost 8,000 hectares. Then travel through the historic towns of Port Augusta and Coober Pedy – known for its opal production and fascinating underground church – before crossing into the Northern Territory.
Many of the sites around famous Uluru are rich with Aboriginal lore. For instance, Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas is said to be the home of the snake god Wanambi. Enjoy sparkling wine as the shifting sun sets Kata Tjuta and Uluru ablaze with colour, then go on to King’s Canyon, where you’ll embark on a six kilometer morning Rim Walk. A day at Alice Springs Desert Park offers you further immersion into the local indigenous culture.
Stop in at the Devil’s Marbles on your way to Tennant Creek, then enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner in this former mining town before going on to Katherine, gateway to Kakadu National Park. Kakadu is one of the Northern Territory’s true natural wonders. Cruise through Katherine Gorge, and on the Yellow Water Billabong, home to a wealth of bird species, as well as fearsome saltwater crocodiles.
In Darwin, explore the history of one of Australia’s most unique capital city. A sightseeing tour takes you to Fannie Bay Gaol, Parliament House, the Botanic Gardens and the Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, home to one of the country’s best collections of Aboriginal art. Spend your last full day exploring Litchfield National Park, where traces of early European settlement meet an Aboriginal legacy dating back thousands of years. Intriguing rock formations and termite mounds dot the landscape, which is populated by hundreds of native species including kangaroos, wallabies, red flying foxes and Dingos.
