Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made Austria & Switzerland: Alpine Adventure
Day 1 Munich, Germany
Arrive in Munich, where you are met by your Guardian Angel, and then proceed to explore the city. Start getting to know the “village of a million people” and traditional capital of Bavaria as you discover its historic center on foot. Stroll along its pedestrianized streets, taking in shops, markets and bustling beer halls, among them the storied Hofbräuhaus. Continue to the Marienplatz, site of the Old and neo-Gothic New Town Hall, with its 314-feet-tall belfry and famous Glockenspiel, a chiming clock that re-enacts two stories from Munich’s history with life-sized characters. Then, see the iconic Frauenkirche — Munich's Gothic cathedral — its twin towers topped with domes rather than spires. Cross Germany’s southern border into Austria and check into your chalet-inspired hotel.
This morning drive to the charming city of Innsbruck. The capital of Tyrol, it’s known for its Imperial architecture. See the landmark Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof). Completed in 1500, it was graced with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles and marked the marriage of Emperor Maximilian I and Bianca Maria Sforza. Continue to the Rococo-style Hofburg Imperial Palace and Gothic, 16th-century Hofkirche (Court Church), built as a mausoleum for Maximilian I. See his cenotaph within, which boasts an impressive collection of German Renaissance sculpture, and then discover the 16th-century Silver Chapel, with its elaborate altar and silver Madonna. After lunch at leisure, change gears as you take a two-hour hike through the undulating Wipptal Valley. Follow the Brenner Pass as you cross lush meadows framed by towering peaks.
Enjoy a privately guided hike with your local guide, setting off from the hotel to follow a pre-arranged route suitable to your fitness and interests. Afterward, the balance of the day is yours to enjoy the hotel facilities at leisure.
Privately transfer to your hotel in Switzerland, stopping en route in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, to begin an active day of adventure. Join a local guide for an e-bike tour visiting five area castles, starting with Vaduz Castle. The Principality’s landmark building, it has presided over Vaduz from its rocky outcrop for some 700 years. Next, cross the Rhine to visit the castle and small town of Werdenberg, and then ascend to the ruined fortress of Wartau. Descend to Sargans Castle and continue to the 13th-century Gutenberg Castle in Balzers, taking in wonderful views from its mountainside perch. Afterward, continue to your accommodation in Switzerland.
Venture on a goat-trekking excursion through Andermatt’s scenic mountain landscape. Four-legged Bärti and Chrigu prove entertaining hiking companions, while making explorations of Ursern Valley especially fun. Wind through unique routes, observing rivers and valleys; hike through scenic vistas; perhaps enjoy a picnic amid beautiful meadows or at huts en route.
Hike along Andermatt’s five-mile “herbal path,” taking note of the stunning surroundings and learning about local flora and fauna en route. End today’s exploration at your hotel, where the remainder of the day is spent at leisure.
Journey privately this morning to your hotel in Lausanne, stopping en route at Mount Stanserhorn to absorb superb views over Lake Lucerne. In 1893 an innovative mountain railway opened to take tourists to the top of this mountain. Continuing this pioneering spirit, the original funicular is now paired with the world’s first open-topped cable car, the Cabrio, offering stunning 360-degree panoramic views from both an enclosed lower deck and the open top deck as it whisks you to the top of the mountain. Upon arrival at the summit, disembark to absorb the breathtaking views and enjoy a refreshment in the revolving restaurant on site. Travel back down the mountain to Stans, to explore the town’s beautiful baroque architecture before continuing to your hotel.
Awake in the city of Lausanne, situated in the French-speaking Vaud region. Built atop five hills by the Romans, it rises in tiers from Lake Geneva. Begin the day exploring the city’s Old Town, seeing the Notre-Dame Cathedral; Hôtel de Ville, seat of municipal and communal councils; and the striking, medieval Fontaine de la Justice. Return to your hotel, where the afternoon is yours to explore at leisure. You may visit the Olympic Museum next door or board a ferry and head to the French town of Evian, famous for its spring water.
After breakfast, privately transfer to Geneva for your international flight.
